A year ago, I had a vision of a pen hanging perfectly still, while a sheet of paper ran through and through and through. I was in bed in Paris, ruminating on why I was visiting (chasing love), and this image of pen and paper wouldn't leave. I had no idea what it meant. Maybe agency, maybe progress, maybe you and me, but I chalked it up to my mood. I didn't forget it and 7 months later we made it.
Now, a year after its completion, I can see that it was a vision of stability, a drawing of a constant. Things are constant and you are secure in it until they stop being constant because they do. When I first saw this in my mind, there was no question of what happens when the ink dries up, or paper runs out.
One could mend these parts, but there may come a point when its worth mending anymore - the labour has taken its toll. The nature of something enduring: it dies out unless we choose to make it live on.
The machine now sits in the corner of my room, lamp in his room, pen somewhere in the living room.
