A year ago, I had a vision of a pen hanging perfectly still, while a sheet of paper ran through and through and through. I was in bed in Paris, thinking about why I was there, and this image of pen and paper wouldn't leave. I had no idea what it meant. Maybe agency, maybe progress, maybe you and me, but chalked it up to being my mood, that's it.
I didn't forget it, and 7 months later, we made it. Even after all that time, I still didn't know what it meant. The piece ended up serving as a memory of what I had felt. Now, a year later, I can see that it was a vision of stability, a drawing of a constant. Things are constant and you are secure in it until they stop being constant because they do. When I first saw this in my mind, there was no question of what happens when the ink dries up, or paper runs out.
We could mend these parts, or maybe there comes a point where its not worth it anymore - the labour has taken its toll. Either way, the nature of something enduring is that eventually it dies out unless we choose to make it live on. The machine now sits in the corner of my room, lamp in his room, pen somewhere in the living room.
